Goals & Objectives

ASAM members and non-members are invited to submit abstracts for poster presentations, focus sessions, and workshop sessions. ASAM encourages investigators, researchers, clinicians, and physicians from diverse organizations and fields to submit.

The ASAM Annual Conference goals and objectives for accepted abstracts are: Note: One of ASAM's objectives for the Annual Conference is to increase the number of scientific and medical posters. ASAM will reopen the Call for Abstracts from January 1 - 22, 2025, for poster presentations only.

▼ Submission Requirements The following bullet points outline important requirements to consider when submitting your abstract:
  • All accepted submissions will be presented in-person in Denver, CO. Do not submit an abstract if you already know you will not be able to present in-person during the conference dates.
  • The first abstract submission period is for poster, focus session, and workshop session submissions. This period will be open from September 4, 2024, through the EXTENDED deadline of October 25, 2024.
  • The second abstract submission period is only for poster presentations. It will be open from January 1, 2025, through January 22, 2025.
  • Abstracts must be original, new work, based on the latest evidence and data. Submissions should use evidence-based information with appropriate references. Anecdotal information should be kept to a minimum.
  • Submitters are not permitted to re-submit abstracts previously submitted to ASAM, whether they were accepted or not. Submissions can be similar to past submissions but MUST be significantly updated to include new data, new teaching methods, or new content.
  • Abstracts must be submitted online through the following ASAM abstract submission link: https://www.abstractscorecard.com/cfp/submit/login.asp?EventKey=OAVISRSG. Abstracts submitted via email, fax, or mail will not be considered.
  • Abstracts submitted outside of the two submission periods will not be reviewed or considered. All submission sections must be complete to be considered.
  • Submitters, presenters, and authors must complete disclosure of commercial interest forms before completing their submissions. Submitters can have commercial disclosures BUT submissions must be free of commercial bias. Having a commercial interest will NOT disqualify a submission.
  • Submissions cannot be used to advertise or advocate for a specific commercial interest.
  • There is a limit of up to 3 abstract submissions by one submitter.
  • Submissions are limited to a total of 8 authors. Submissions must have at least 1 but no more than 4 presenting authors. Submissions may have up to 7 non-presenting authors as long as the total number of authors does not exceed 8. No one can be listed as presenting author for more than 3 accepted submissions.
  • The ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee seeks to provide content on a wide variety of topics to best meet the interests and learning needs of our conference attendees. Abstracts on any topic related to addiction medicine will be considered. Click here for a list of 2025 Annual Conference Priority Topics.

  • Session Submission "Abstract & Details" section includes multiple parts:
    • Title – 12 words max.
    • ACGME and IPEC Competencies – Checkboxes that indicate which competencies the submission will address
    • Teaching Methods – Checkboxes that indicate the teaching methods the submission will use
    • Background & Purpose – 50-350 words
    • Session Plan & Teaching Methods – 50-350 words
    • References – 3-5 scholarly or scientific publications that were used to create the abstract. 50-350 words.
    • Health Equity – This should describe how your submission will address health equity and health disparities. 20-200 words.
  • Poster Submission "Abstract & Details" section includes multiple parts:
    • Title – 12 words max.
    • Consideration for Awards – Checkboxes that indicate which awards could apply to the submission
    • Preferred Date of Presentation – select to present on Friday, April 25, 2025, OR Saturday, April 26, 2025, OR no preference
    • Background & Introduction – 20-200 words
    • Methods – 20-200 words
    • Results – 20-400 words
    • Conclusions & Discussion – 20-200 words
    • References – 3-5 scholarly or scientific publications that were used to create the abstract. 50-350 words
    • Health Equity – This should describe how your submission will address health equity and health disparities. 20-200 words.
  • Poster Submission - Case Study/Series "Abstract & Details" section includes multiple parts:
    • Title – 12 words max.
    • Consideration for Awards – Checkboxes that indicate which awards could apply to the submission
    • Preferred Date of Presentation – select to present on Friday, April 25, 2025, OR Saturday, April 26, 2025, OR no preference
    • Background & Introduction – 20-200 words
    • Case Description – 50-400 words
    • Conclusions & Discussion – 20-200 words
    • References – 3-5 scholarly or scientific publications that were used to create the abstract. 50-350 words
    • Health Equity – This should describe how your submission will address health equity and health disparities. 20-200 words.
  • Email education@ASAM.org to withdraw or delete submissions.
  • Accepted abstracts will appear in full in several places, including but not limited to the event website/mobile app, the ASAM eLearning Center, and the Journal of Addiction Medicine (posters only). Submitters are responsible for ensuring that there are no conflicts with making the abstract information available, before the submission of the abstract.
  • First round submitters of abstracts will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance in December 2024. Second round submitters of abstracts will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance of their abstract by the end of February 2025. It is the submitter's responsibility to notify their fellow presenters or authors.
  • Upon acceptance, all presenting AND non-presenting authors will be asked for additional information (eg, professional photos, bios, poster PDFs, session slides, presenter agreements, etc.). Presenting authors will have more information to submit than non-presenting authors. The information must be completed by their posted deadlines. There will be one preliminary deadline in mid-January 2025 and a final deadline in mid-March 2025. All presentation slides and poster PDFs will be reviewed by members of the ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee and feedback will be provided. This review MUST be completed before the presentation can be shown to attendees.
  • Presenters of accepted abstracts will receive a discounted registration rate after all presentation materials have been turned in.

▼ Submission Categories

These are the submission categories accepted during the first abstract submission period (September 4 - October 25, 2024). Poster presentation submissions are the only submission types accepted during the second abstract submission period (January 1 - 22, 2025).

  • Focus Sessions: Focus sessions are 75-minute presentations designed to give learners an in-depth understanding of a specific clinical or scientific topic. Focus sessions are typically presented in a structured didactic format but other creative teaching methods are strongly encouraged.
  • Workshop Sessions: Workshop sessions are 75-minute interactive and experiential sessions designed to give learners an in-depth understanding of a specific clinical or scientific topic. Workshop sessions must use a variety of interactive teaching formats such as small group discussions, case-examples, demonstrations, worksheets, and other skill-building exercises. Workshops must include a minimum of 20 minutes of activities in groups of 2-10 learners.
  • Poster Presentations: Poster presentations offer an opportunity to share research interests and ideas. Presenters are required to prepare physical and electronic posters, set them up, and present them on EITHER Friday, April 25, 2025, OR Saturday, April 26, 2025.

The ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee recommends the following abstract writing resources for those unsure of how to begin their abstract:

▼ Abstract Awards The ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee will recognize the primary authors of high scoring and exceptional poster abstracts with the following seven awards:

  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Best Overall
    This award is presented to the primary author of the highest scoring submitted abstract.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Associated Professionals
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author who is one of the following types of professional: Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN), Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry (Psych-CNS), Clinical Psychologists (PhD or PsyD), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Nursing Science (DNP or equivalent), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Physician Associate (PA), Registered Nurse (RN), Social Workers, or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Fellow-in-Training
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author currently enrolled in a medical fellowship program. A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Representation in Research
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author who is from racial and/or ethnic underrepresented minority backgrounds (ie, American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Non-Caucasian Hispanic or Latinx). A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Resident
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author currently enrolled in a medical residency program. A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Student
    This award is presented to a poster's primary author who is currently enrolled as a student in a graduate or undergraduate program. A primary author who fits this category should indicate so on the abstract form.
  • ASAM Abstract Submission Award: Underserved Population
    This award is presented to the primary author of the highest scoring submitted abstract that addresses research on an underserved population (characterized by race, ethnicity, gender, and/or sexual orientation).
These awards will be made based on new ideas or findings of importance to the field of addiction medicine, their methodology, and clarity of presentation, as judged by the Committee. The ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee will select "Honorable Mentions" in categories where there are multiple exceptional submissions. Award winners will be notified by the end of February 2025.

▼ Reviewers & Review Process Abstracts will be evaluated based on the submission criteria using a scale ranging from 0 to 4. Abstracts will be reviewed by multiple reviewers and the average score will be used to rank the priority of the presentation. Session submissions will be scored on the following criteria: Contribution to Discipline; Session Plan/Teaching Methods; Purpose; Applicability; and Quality of Writing. Poster submissions will be scored on the following criteria: Contribution to Discipline; Purpose; Methods; Results; Conclusions and Implications; and Quality of Writing.

Reviewers will also review the financial disclosures of the abstract authors in cases where there is a concern. Having a financial disclosure will NOT preclude an abstract's acceptance.

The Planning Committee members are the primary abstract reviewers. Current ASAM Members who have attended at least one prior Annual Conference (in-person or virtually) can volunteer to participate as abstract reviewers. ▼ Notification Letters
All notifications, of acceptance or non-acceptance, will be sent by email. It is the submitter's responsibility to ensure their email address is correct and current. ASAM is not responsible for notification emails not received due to incorrect contact information.

All abstract presenters will be asked to confirm receipt of their notification email and officially accept the invitation to present their abstract. Notification letters for abstract submissions received during the first Call for Abstracts period will be sent out in mid-December 2024. Notification letters for abstract submissions received during the second Call for Abstracts period will be sent out in mid-February 2025. If you do not receive a notification email, contact the Education Department at: education@ASAM.org, immediately to confirm acceptance or non-acceptance of your submission.

▼ Abstract Cancellation Policy Please do not submit an abstract if you are not confident that you will be able to attend the conference in-person and make the presentation. Cancellations impose a serious burden on the development of the conference program and may negatively impact the overall quality of the program.

If your presentation has been accepted but extenuating circumstances prevent your attendance, we ask that you attempt to find another individual to make the presentation and notify us of this change as soon as possible at: education@ASAM.org.

If no other individual is available to present the accepted abstract and cancellation becomes unavoidable, please contact us immediately at the aforementioned email address so we can remove your presentation from the conference program.
