Dr. Timothy J. Wiegand DFACMT, FAACT, DFASAM is a nationally recognized leader in medical toxicology and addiction medicine who recently transitioned from academic medicine, where he served as Associate Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He founded and scaled a high-impact toxicology and addiction consult service and led both Addiction Medicine and Medical Toxicology fellowship programs, training and mentoring a generation of clinicians. His work has focused on complex, real-world challenges, including acute toxicologic emergencies, substance use disorders, and innovative pain and perioperative management strategies for patients with opioid use disorder.
Dr. Wiegand now focuses on building and advising clinical programs, consulting, and advancing novel, nontraditional approaches to addiction treatment at both the systems and patient-care levels. He serves in multiple consultant and volunteer roles at the state and national levels, is President-Elect of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Medical Toxicology (DFACMT).
He has served on the ASAM Board of Directors for over eight years and is a frequent presenter at the ASAM Annual Conference, leading lectures and workshops. He also moderates the monthly Addiction Toxicology Case Conference, an interactive national forum highlighting the intersection of addiction medicine and medical toxicology.
Dr. Wiegand is deeply committed to mentorship; many of his fellows and mentees have gone on to leadership roles within NYSAM, ASAM, and their respective institutions. In recognition of his contributions, he received the ASAM Annual Award in 2022.
Outside of work, he enjoys dancing with his wife, Bonnie—currently learning the Argentine tango to Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love. Their three children, Eli, Sera, and Charlie, keep them grounded and focused on what matters most
