Addiction Psychiatrist, Pain Physician, and Assistant Professor

Pouya Azar, MD, FRCPC, DABAM, is an Addiction Physician and Co-Medical Manager of the Complex Pain and Addiction Service (CPAS), a consult service at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). CPAS provides integrated pain, mental health, and substance use care across VGH, UBC Hospital, and GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. Additionally, Dr. Azar is a pain physician at the VGH Transitional Pain Clinic. Previously, he served as Addiction Lead at Foundry Vancouver Granville and as a consulting physician in adolescent addiction medicine at BC Children’s Hospital. Driven by a commitment to innovation and research excellence, he co-leads the Addiction Medicine Research and Innovation Program at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, serves as an Assistant Professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, and is the Director of the VGH & UBC Concurrent Disorders and Pain Fellowship.
Dr. Azar’s clinical and translational research focuses on developing and evaluating novel opioid agonist treatment protocols and medical devices to improve outcomes for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders.
