Dr. Ryan is Professor of Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine and Director of Outpatient Adolescent Clinical Services at the Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center. She is a pediatrician who is board certified in both Adolescent Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Ryan completed her medical training at Yale University, her pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and her Adolescent Medicine fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Ryan is also currently the Program Director for the Interdisciplinary Fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Penn State and also has a busy specialized clinical practice for adolescents and young adults.
Dr. Ryan has served as member and Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Substance Use and Prevention and in that capacity she was lead and primary author on several Position statements, Technical reports and Clinical Reports related to cannabis use in adolescents, and the effects of cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding on infants and children.
She has also served on the recent PA state-level legislative taskforce assessing the effect of parental substance use on child health and well-being and has testified to state legislatures and the Institute of Medicine regarding the long-term effects of prenatal exposure on infant and child health outcomes and the long-term effects of use among adolescents. She has given many invited lectures on this topic at regional, national and international professional meetings, and currently has an active clinical practice treating adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders.
Dr. Ryan also has a current Federal HRSA grant that focuses on developing strategies to increase the capacity of primary care and behavioral health care providers to treat individuals with substance use disorders
