Dr. Michelle A. Cabán-Ruiz is a Clinical Psychologist and assistant professor at Universidad Central del Caribe in Puerto Rico, where she also serves as an addiction researcher, project manager, and grant writer. With a passion for advancing knowledge and improving health outcomes, Dr. Cabán-Ruiz’s research primarily focuses on substance use during breastfeeding among Puerto Rican mothers. Her work aims to understand the frequency of substance use during this critical period, as well as its potential impact on both maternal and infant health. She investigates how cultural, social, and psychological factors unique to the Puerto Rican context may influence substance use and its consequences.
In addition to her research, Dr. Cabán-Ruiz is the Community Coordinator for the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program, where she plays a key role in creating educational opportunities and fostering community involvement. As an educator and researcher, Dr. Cabán-Ruiz is deeply committed to mentoring students, encouraging them to engage with complex issues in addiction treatment and research. Through her dedication, she works to inspire the next generation of addiction professionals, equipping them with the tools needed to make a meaningful impact in the field. Her work combines scholarly expertise with a passion for community-oriented, culturally competent healthcare.
