Medical Director
Boulder Care
Portland, Oregon
Elizabeth "Liz" Bogel Ryan, MD (she/they) has been Boulder’s medical director since 2022 and is board-certified in both family & addiction medicine. Her circuitous route to medicine drew on experiences as a paramedic, fire fighter, rugby fly-half, ocean sailor, and jazz musician and continues to steer her towards broad, community-based perspectives on the practice of medicine.
She spent her early career at Federally Qualified Health Centers near Seattle, WA and Ithaca, NY before falling in love with addiction medicine as the founding director of primary care for a non-profit harm reduction clinic which rapidly became the largest prescriber of MOUD in New York State and cemented her investment in community partnerships and advocacy work.
In her work at Boulder she feeds on: lowering barriers to the basic, human right that is healthcare; exceptional teamwork with trusted colleagues; flashes of progress towards the re-dignification of American medicine; and the vulnerable, messy stories of recovery from both use disorders and the systems which have demonized them.
