Michael Ungar, Ph.D., is a Family Therapist and Professor of Social Work at Dalhousie University where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Child, Family and Community Resilience. His research on multisystemic resilience across cultures has made him the most cited Social Work scholar in the world. Building on more than $30,000,000 in funded research, Dr. Ungar’s work is relied upon by numerous educational institutions, health centers, government agencies, businesses and not-for-profits to guide their approaches to nurturing and maintaining the wellbeing of diverse child and adult populations experiencing adversity. That work shows that positive development under stress is best explained by interactions between biological, psychological, social, institutional, and environmental factors. He is the author of more than 280 scholarly papers and 18 books for mental health professionals, educators, researchers, caregivers and employers, including "Change Your World: The Science of Resilience and the True Path to Success" and "The Limits of Resilience: When to Persevere, When to Change, and When to Quit." Dr. Ungar has received numerous awards for his scholarship and contributions to his community, including the Canadian Association of Social Workers National Distinguished Service Award, and has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His blog, Nurturing Resilience, can be read on Psychology Today’s website.
