Scott Simpson, MD, MPH, is a Professor and Director of the Division of Community, Population, and Public Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Simpson has a national reputation for developing innovative clinical interventions and training programs to improve the treatment of behavioral emergencies. These successes include developing hospital-based buprenorphine induction programs, pioneering an integrated care service based in the pediatric emergency department, designing training for US Army Behavioral Health Specialists in crisis psychiatry, and founding Denver Health’s Emergency Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Simpson’s textbook, entitled The Clinical Interview: Skills for More Effective Patient Encounters, helps healthcare professionals from all fields apply the techniques of psychotherapy to their own daily work. Dr. Simpson’s passion for the vital work of crisis behavioral health care is further reflected in his more than 200 publications and presentations and his leadership role winning over $14 million in external funding. Dr. Simpson has also been nationally recognized for his teaching and scholarship. He has served as an elected trustee of the Colorado Psychiatric Society and honored by that Society with an Outstanding Achievement Award. Dr. Simpson serves as the Director of Research of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry, and he has been recognized by the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry with the Stoudemire Innovations in Education Award; Dorfman Journal Paper Award for Original Research, and a Special Recognition Award.
