Executive Director, Phoenix Recovery Support Services
Vauna Hernandez is a respected leader in recovery housing with more than two decades of experience in operations, transitional housing, and community-based program development. As Executive Director of Phoenix Recovery Support Services, she leads a 125 bed, IDHS SUPR licensed recovery housing organization on Chicago’s West Side. Phoenix operates two low barrier recovery housing programs alongside a traditional abstinence-based recovery home, allowing individuals to access support that aligns with their stage of recovery and personal needs.
Ms. Hernandez’s work centers on equity, access, and culturally responsive care. She has spent her career expanding recovery housing opportunities for communities disproportionately impacted by substance use disorder, justice system involvement, and housing instability. She is a strong advocate for Medication Assisted Recovery and works intentionally to reduce stigma through education, relationship building, and the use of evidence-based practices. Her approach emphasizes recovery capital, ensuring residents build the skills, supports, and connections needed for long-term stability beyond housing.
Ms. Hernandez serves on the Illinois Opioid Crisis Response Advisory Council and is a member of the National Alliance of Recovery Residences Advocacy Committee. Her leadership reflects a deep belief in the power of recovery housing to support individual transformation while strengthening families and communities.
