Edward W Boyer MD PhD, currently Professor with Tenure at The Ohio State University, is a native of Mississippi; he attended Vanderbilt University before earning his doctorate in synthetic organic chemistry from Columbia University. Dr. Boyer was a NIH postdoctoral fellow at The Rockefeller University before receiving his doctorate in medicine, also from Columbia University. After serving on the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, he was recruited in 2016 to develop the academic infrastructure of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he rose to the rank of Professor at Harvard Medical School. He joined the faculty of The Ohio State University as Professor in 2021; he also practices at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on the Toxicology Service.
Dr. Boyer’s research, which transcends disciplinary and methodological boundaries, lies at the intersection of engineering, behavioral science, and healthcare. His studies on ingestible biosensors, machine learning-tagged music to decrease pain, real-time adaptable interventions to improve antiretroviral adherence, wearable biosensors to detect illicit drug use, robots in emergency department applications, remote detection of vital signs of ED patients, and digital phenotyping to detect mild traumatic brain injury and febrile illness, have been continuously funded by NIH since 2001. In 2018, Dr. Boyer was named a Fulbright Scholar to Malaysia where he used machine learning to study the use characteristics of kratom. He is also a beekeeper.
His work has been recognized with the NIH Natural Product Neuroscience COBRE Award (2008), the Society of Behavioral Medicine’s Citation Award (2015), MIT Media Lab’s Health and Wellness Innovations Best User Experience (2013), Medstro’s Innovations in Healthcare Challenge (2016), and the American College of Medical Toxicology’s National Research Award (2011). He is, however, most proud of his mentee’s accomplishments in building exceptional academic careers of their own.
